The case has been lavishly decorated with Boulle flowers, acanthus scrolls and mythical creatures - the marvelous marquetry was created with brass, silver and tortoiseshell. The high rectangular body with a column in each corner sits on four bracket feet; the glass front door is fitted with an arched window to show the dial. The inverted bell gable has four knobs in the form of acanthus leaves. Handle with Habsburg double-headed eagle and initials of Austrian Empress Maria Theresa.

Described and illustrated in Norbert Tieger: „Grandi orologi“ – page 106 and 107.

Archduchess Maria Theresa of Austria (* May 13, 1717 in Vienna; † November 29, 1780 in Vienna) was - as reigning Archduchess of Austria and Queen of Hungary and Bohemia (1740-1780) - one of the most powerful rulers of her time. She was the wife of Emperor Francis I and co-regent with her son, Emperor Joseph II.

After the Russo-Turkish war 1768-1774 the Ottoman Empire had to sign the Treaty of Küçük Kaynarca, in which the Crimean Khanate formally gained its independence and the Ottomans ceded the Bukovina to the Habsburg Empire. Empress Maria Theresa received the deeds from Constantinople on February 25, 1777 and on October 11, 1777 Turkish Sultan Abdul Hamid announced to the inhabitants of the Bukovina that they should pay homage to their new sovereign, which they duly did on the following day.
